Do your ETFs really diversify, or are you buying the same stocks twice? Pick two or three and find out.

MSCI World + S&P 500: mucho solapamiento; aumenta tu peso en EE. UU.

What ETF overlap means

Two ETFs overlap when they hold the same companies. It's very common: an MSCI World fund is roughly 70% US stocks, so adding an S&P 500 or Nasdaq-100 ETF means buying Nvidia, Apple and Microsoft again. That isn't bad in itself, but you should know it: your portfolio is more concentrated than it looks.

How we calculate it

We compare the top holdings published by each issuer. For every company held by both funds we take the smaller weight and add them up: that's a minimum of the real overlap, which is always higher because we only see the top positions. If both ETFs track the same index, the overlap is practically total.

Typical combinations

VOO + QQQ: the Nasdaq-100 giants are also the S&P 500's largest holdings. VTI + VOO: around 85% the same. MSCI World + S&P 500: heavy overlap that raises your US weight. World + emerging markets: almost no overlap; the classic way to complete global coverage. Two semiconductor ETFs (SMH, SOXX): mostly the same ten companies with different weights.

Preguntas frecuentesFAQ

¿Qué porcentaje de solapamiento es demasiado? Is there a level of overlap that is too much?

There is no magic number. If two ETFs share more than half their portfolio, the second one barely diversifies: ask whether you want it for another reason (more tech weight, for example).

¿Por qué el resultado dice «al menos»?Why does the result say "at least"?

Because we only compare each fund's top holdings. The rest can also overlap, so the real figure is equal or higher.

Does holding IWDA and VWCE together make sense?

They share nearly all large companies; VWCE also includes emerging markets. Usually one of the two is enough.
