Data & rankings

IA y semiconductores

The heart of it all. Running a single AI chip takes seven layers; the higher up, the stronger the moat. Almost every household-name company lives in the lower half.

1

Design · EDA software

The software chips are designed with. A pure oligopoly with recurring revenue. The most underrated layer.

Electronic design automation (EDA) software is the "AutoCAD of chips": without it you can't design a processor with billions of transistors. It's an almost perfect oligopoly with recurring licence revenue, huge margins and customers who can't switch tools without redoing their whole workflow.

Leaders: Synopsys · Cadence · Siemens EDA

To invest: Synopsys (SNPS) and Cadence (CDNS) trade as pure-plays. Siemens EDA (formerly Mentor Graphics) isn't listed separately: it's a division of Siemens AG (ADR: SIEGY), an industrial conglomerate where EDA is just one part.

2

Equipment & lithography

The machines that make the chips. ASML holds the EUV lithography monopoly. Picks and shovels.

Líderes: ASML · Applied Materials · Lam Research · KLA · Tokyo Electron

The machines that turn a design into real silicon. ASML is the crown jewel: it monopolises EUV lithography, without which the most advanced chips don't exist, and each machine costs hundreds of millions. The rest dominate other steps —deposition, etching, quality control—. It's the picks and shovels play: they win no matter who sells the chips, because every manufacturer buys from them.

Leaders: ASML · Applied Materials · Lam Research · KLA · Tokyo Electron

A huge moat with almost insurmountable barriers to entry: decades of R&D and accumulated IP. The weak spot: they depend on geopolitics (export restrictions to China).

3

Foundry

Who makes the chip. TSMC has ~72% of the market and controls CoWoS packaging, today the sharpest bottleneck.

The factories that physically produce the chips others design. TSMC is the undisputed king: ~72% of the market and, above all, control of advanced packaging (CoWoS), today the sharpest bottleneck in the whole industry. Samsung fights for second place and Intel is trying to re-enter the third-party foundry business.

Leaders: TSMC · Samsung · Intel

Building a new fab costs over $20 billion and several years: that's why power is so concentrated. Clear geopolitical risk from the concentration in Taiwan.

4

HBM / DRAM memory

The memory that feeds the GPUs. Only three makers; sold out through 2026. One of the hottest themes.

The high-speed memory (HBM) that feeds the GPUs. Only three companies in the world make it, and demand far outstrips supply: SK Hynix and Micron have their 2026 output sold under contract. It was the epicentre of the June 2026 selloff and, at the same time, the reason Micron held up: its yearly revenue was already committed.

Leaders: SK Hynix · Micron · Samsung

Historically memory is very cyclical (it swings hard). AI has changed the rules, but it's still the most volatile link in the whole chain.

5

Chip design · GPU & ASIC

GPUs (Nvidia, AMD) and custom chips for hyperscalers (Broadcom, Marvell). Top growth, more competition.

The most famous layer and the one that grabs the headlines. Nvidia designs the GPUs that power AI and is the most valuable company in the world; AMD chases. But money also flows to the custom chips (ASIC) that Broadcom and Marvell design for Google, Meta or Amazon, and to Arm, which charges a royalty on nearly every mobile chip on the planet.

Leaders: Nvidia · AMD · Broadcom · Marvell · Arm

Top growth, but also top competition and demanding valuations: it's the layer where a correction bites hardest, as seen in June 2026.

6

Physical infrastructure

Connecting, powering and cooling the GPUs. The

The "boring" layer almost nobody includes and that really grows. When an AI data center costs billions, this "plumbing" takes a huge share of the spend: connecting thousands of GPUs (Arista), powering and cooling them (Vertiv), assembling the servers (Super Micro) and moving data over optics (Coherent).

Leaders: Arista · Vertiv · Super Micro · Coherent

It links directly to the Energy industry: the next bottleneck isn't the chip, it's the electricity to run it.

7

Cloud & hyperscalers

Those who pay for the party and build their own chips (TPU, Trainium, Maia).

The ones who pay for the party: they'll spend close to $700 billion in 2026 on AI infrastructure. They also design their own chips (Google's TPU, Amazon's Trainium, Microsoft's Maia) to depend less on Nvidia. For an investor they're the "diversified" exposure: giant, profitable businesses where AI is a growth lever, not the whole bet.

Leaders: Microsoft · Google · Amazon · Meta

The risk: if AI's payoff disappoints, this record spending is the first thing the market fears will be cut. It's the underlying "bubble" debate.

Foso fuerte (oligopolio/monopolio)Strong moat (oligopoly/monopoly) Competido pero alto crecimientoCompetitive but high growth Infraestructura y demandaInfrastructure & demand

The bottlenecks

No. 1

Advanced packaging (CoWoS)

TSMC · Amkor · Intel

It joins the logic chip with the HBM memory. TSMC's capacity is sold out well into 2026 and oversubscribed. Building a new plant needs equipment with 12-18 month lead times. The most pressing one.

No. 2

HBM memory

SK Hynix · Micron · Samsung

SK Hynix has already sold all its 2026 HBM and Micron's is reserved. Goldman calls it the most severe memory shortage in 15 years, with strain until ~2028.

No. 3

EUV lithography

ASML (en solitario)

The underlying structural bottleneck: without ASML's EUV machines there are no advanced nodes. Less acute short-term, but the deepest moat in the industry —a real monopoly—.

No. 4

Electric power

Red · Vertiv · utilities

The one that's coming, and maybe the definitive one. GPUs are no longer so scarce; the power grid is. Expanding it runs on industrial timelines, not chip-fab ones. It links to the Energy industry.

Energy & electrification

Most tied to AI

The power grid is AI's bottleneck No. 4 and, at the same time, the engine of electric cars and reindustrialization. Data-center consumption could double to ~945 TWh by 2030. Nuclear, including small modular reactors (SMR), is the only clean 24/7 source; Microsoft, Amazon and Google are already signing direct deals. Within the theme: nuclear/uranium, renewables and the grid itself (transformers, cabling).

How to fit them in: satellite themes, not the whole portfolio

The usual idea: a diversified global core (for example, an MSCI World) as the base, and these themes as small satellites —something like 5-10% each as a cap— so you don't over-concentrate. The more themes you add, the more they overlap (copper shows up in energy and AI; Nvidia in AI and robotics), so avoid doubling the same bet. You can try specific allocations in the Simulator tab.

How to get started in practice

Understanding the themes is half of it; the other half is executing well and cheaply. This is the basic guide for an individual investor, in plain language. It's not advice: it's the map so you can make your own informed decisions.

Recorrido recomendado

Recommended path

Not sure where to start? Follow this path, from idea to action:

  1. Understand the AI value chain — how the pieces fit together.
  2. Pick your theme — chips, energy, hyperscalers, cybersecurity or health.
  3. Compare the leaders — head to head, with verified figures.
  4. Learn to build your portfolio — ETFs, stocks and diversifying by layer.
  5. Test your plan in the simulator — without risking money.
1

Choose a broker

You need an account to buy ETFs. Look at three things: buy/sell and custody fees, which UCITS ETFs it offers, and whether it allows automatic recurring contributions. Low-cost brokers usually pay off over the long run, but check how they handle taxes (some foreign ones don't withhold or report to the tax authority, so you'd have to declare it yourself).

2

UCITS, no ETFs de EE. UU.

UCITS, not US ETFs

From the EU, under PRIIPs rules, as a retail investor you normally can't buy the famous US ETFs (SPY, the original SMH, etc.). That's why this guide always uses the UCITS (European) versions, their regulated equivalent here. It's exactly what's in the Industries tab, with its ISIN.

3

Accumulating vs distributing

An accumulating ETF reinvests dividends inside the fund: you don't receive cash, but you defer taxes and compound better long-term. A distributing one pays you the dividends, which are taxed each year. To grow over the long run, accumulating is usually more tax-efficient.

4

Automatiza y no temporices

Automate, don't time the market

Contributing a fixed amount every month (DCA) removes the temptation to guess the best moment, which almost nobody gets right. It's exactly what the simulator models with the recurring contribution. Automate it and forget about it.

5

Core + satellites, and rebalance

The usual approach: a diversified global core as the base and the themes as small satellites (5-10% each as a cap). Once or twice a year, rebalance to return to your target percentages and avoid ending up with a much riskier portfolio than you wanted. We expand on this in the guide to building an AI portfolio.

6

Tax basics (Spain)

When you sell at a profit you pay in the savings tax base: 19% up to €6,000, 21% up to €50,000, 23% up to €200,000, 27% up to €300,000 and 28% above (on the gain, not the whole amount). An important nuance: index funds allow transfers between funds tax-free until you redeem; ETFs don't (each sale is a taxable event). That's why many people in Spain use index funds for the core and ETFs for the thematic satellites.

Where to open your account

You need an account to buy ETFs. There are several low-cost options; each one shines at something different. Compare them by fees, ETF catalog and taxes, and decide for yourself.

  • Interactive Brokers — catálogo global enorme y comisiones bajas; ideal si quieres acceso a casi cualquier mercado.huge global catalog and low fees; ideal if you want access to almost any market.

The terms that come up most, in one sentence.

HBM
Beta alta (IA) amplifica subidas y caídas; baja (bonos, oro) amortigua.
HBM
High Bandwidth Memory. Stacks of memory chips bonded to the GPU to feed it data. Very scarce.
CoWoS
TSMC's technique that joins the compute chip with the HBM memory. Today the sharpest bottleneck in AI.
EUV
Extreme ultraviolet lithography. ASML's (monopoly) technology for making the most advanced chips.
ASIC
A chip custom-designed for one task (e.g. Google's TPUs), versus a generic GPU. Made by Broadcom and Marvell.
Foundry
A factory that makes chips for others. TSMC is dominant with ~72% of the market.
Hyperscaler
A cloud giant (Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Meta) that builds huge data centers and funds much of AI.
ETF
A fund that trades on the exchange like a stock and tracks an index or theme. You diversify with a single purchase.
UCITS
A European regulatory label. It's the version of an ETF a retail investor can buy in the EU.
ETC
An exchange-traded product backed by a physical commodity (e.g. gold). Works much like an ETF.
ISIN
A unique 12-character code identifying a security or fund worldwide. You use it to find it at your broker.
TER
The fund's annual cost, in %. It's deducted from returns. The lower, the better over the long run.
Accumulating / distributing
Accumulating reinvests dividends (defers taxes); distributing pays them out (taxed each year).
Volatility
How much an investment rises and falls. More volatility = more nerves and a wider range of outcomes.
Percentile (p10 / p50 / p90)
In Monte Carlo mode: p50 is the central outcome; p10 is "1 in 10 does worse"; p90, "1 in 10 does better".
Maximum drawdown
The largest peak-to-trough drop a portfolio suffers. It measures how much pain you'd endure in a bad streak.
DCA
Contributing a fixed amount periodically, without trying to time the market. The simple way to invest.
Beta
How much an asset moves relative to the market. High beta (AI) amplifies gains and drops; low (bonds, gold) cushions.

Before you take the step

Keep a separate emergency fund, invest only money you don't need in the short term, and understand that over 10-20 years there will be sharp drops along the way (the simulator's Monte Carlo mode shows them). Preguntas frecuentes

Frequently asked questions

Can I invest in AI with little money?
Yes. With an ETF you can start small and add a little every month. What matters most long-term is consistency and time (compounding), not starting with a lot. The simulator lets you see that effect.
What's the best way to invest in AI?
For most people, a diversified semiconductor or AI ETF reduces the risk of betting on a single company. Individual stocks (Nvidia, ASML…) give more control but concentrate risk. Many combine an ETF core with a few stocks as satellites.
There are signs of euphoria (high valuations, record retail inflows), but unlike the dot-com era, the big chip companies have real profits. After the June selloff, the 2026 consensus is about correction risk and volatility, not necessarily a collapse. That's why position sizing and diversification matter.
¿Qué ETF de IA es mejor?Which AI ETF is best?
There's no single "best" one. From Europe, semiconductor UCITS ETFs like VanEck Semiconductor (more concentrated in leaders) or Amundi/iShares (broader, including equipment makers) are common. Compare them by holdings and fee (TER). The list with ISINs is in the Industries tab.
¿Qué es un ETF UCITS y por qué no compro los de EE. UU.?What is a UCITS ETF and why not the US ones?
UCITS is the European regulatory standard. Due to PRIIPs rules, a retail investor in the EU usually can't buy the famous US ETFs; you buy their UCITS equivalent, which is what we list here with its ISIN.
¿Cuánto puedo perder?How much can I lose?
Any market investment can lose value, including your capital. Concentrated themes like AI are more volatile: on 23 June 2026, Samsung and SK Hynix fell more than 12% in a single session and Micron 13%. The simulator's Monte Carlo mode shows you those drops.
Invest in AI or in the MSCI World?
The MSCI World already includes the AI giants, with far less risk. Betting on concentrated themes can pay more, but with bigger scares. The usual approach: a broad global core with AI as a satellite. In the simulator you can switch on "Compare with the MSCI World" to see it.
¿Es buen momento para invertir en IA en 2026?Is 2026 a good time to invest in AI?
No one reliably times the market. Instead of guessing, many people invest a fixed amount each month (DCA): you buy high and low and reduce the risk of entering on the worst day. This isn't advice; decide based on your horizon and risk tolerance.
